Laugh Tale Theory: Is It Based on Castle in the Sky?

With the Final Saga now deep into the Elbaf Arc and Laugh Tale closer than ever to being reached, fans around the world are asking the same question: what will the One Piece actually be? A theory gaining serious traction in Japan argues that Eiichiro Oda didn’t just take inspiration from Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky (Laputa) — he built Laugh Tale itself as a direct homage to the legendary floating fortress. If this theory is correct, the parallels between these two worlds aren’t coincidences; they’re a roadmap to where Luffy’s journey ends.

The Theory

Core Hypothesis

Oda deliberately modeled Laugh Tale — its structure, secrets, and mythology — on the floating kingdom of Laputa from Hayao Miyazaki’s 1986 film, and the 10 parallels between the two works reveal key truths about the One Piece endgame.

The stakes here are enormous. Oda has publicly declared himself a lifelong Miyazaki fan, and the structural DNA of *Castle in the Sky* appears woven into One Piece at every level — from the Poneglyphs to the Will of D, from Cipher Pol’s robotic soldiers to the sky islands. If Laugh Tale truly mirrors Laputa, then the floating ancient kingdom, a world-ending “Barus”-style moment, and a final reckoning between “good D” and “evil D” may all be baked into Oda’s plan from the very beginning.

Evidence from the Manga

  1. Chapter 105 (Volume 12) — Laugh Tale’s Visual Resemblance to Laputa: The earliest image of Laugh Tale shown in the manga depicts a sky island shrouded in clouds, visually echoing Laputa’s “Dragon’s Nest” — a massive low-pressure storm system that hides the floating castle from the outside world. Just as Laputa reveals itself only to those bearing a “flying stone,” Laugh Tale is reachable only by those who possess the knowledge carried in the four Road Poneglyphs.
  2. Chapter 202 (Volume 22) — The Poneglyphs Mirror Laputa’s Black Stone Tablets: When Robin first encounters a Poneglyph, the visual parallel to Laputa’s mysterious black stone slabs is unmistakable. Both are ancient inscribed stones, both are written in lost languages that only specific bloodlines can read, and both contain coordinates or knowledge pointing toward a hidden civilization of overwhelming power.
  3. 📌 Key Evidence: In Castle in the Sky, the villain Muska’s full name is “Romuska Palo Ul Laputa” — “Ul” meaning “King” in Laputian. The hero Sheeta’s full name is “Lusheeta Toel Ul Laputa” — “Toel” meaning “True.” Two descendants of the same royal bloodline, one aligned with destruction, one with hope. In One Piece, the Will of D operates identically: “good D” (Luffy, Roger, Law) versus “evil D” (Blackbeard, Rocks D. Xebec) — two factions of the same ancient lineage pulling the world toward salvation or ruin.

  4. Chapter 277 (Volume 30) — The Ark Maxim and Laputa’s Flying Warships: Enel’s Ark Maxim is a direct visual and conceptual echo of the Tiger Moth, the airship of Laputa’s sky pirates the Dora Gang. Both are ancient-technology flying vessels crewed by factions outside conventional authority. Notably, Laputa features multiple flying ships — including one that first discovered the castle — which mirrors how the story of Laugh Tale is tied to those who sought it before Roger.
  5. Multiple Chapters — Noland and Pazzu’s Father (The “Liar” Archetype): Pazzu’s father photographed Laputa with his own eyes but was branded a fraud and a liar by society. Montblanc Noland discovered Shandora and its golden city but was executed as a liar before his name could be cleared. In both stories, it is the next generation — Pazzu/Luffy — who ultimately vindicates the dreamer by reaching the place everyone else called a myth.
  6. 📌 Key Evidence: The voice actress Mayumi Tanaka played Pazzu — Laputa’s hero — in 1986. Thirteen years later in 1999, she won the audition to voice Monkey D. Luffy. Oda has confirmed in the ONE PIECE 10th Treasures interview that from his very first one-shot, he was drawing Luffy with Tanaka’s voice in mind, specifically mentioning “the voice of Pazzu.” This is not a coincidence — it is Oda consciously casting the soul of Laputa’s hero into his own.

  7. Thematic Parallel — “I Won’t Be a Pirate” vs. “I Will Be King of the Pirates”: In the middle of Castle in the Sky, Pazzu joins the Dora pirate gang to rescue Sheeta, but tells her plainly: “I won’t become a pirate.” Monkey D. Luffy’s defining declaration from Chapter 1 onward is: “I will become King of the Pirates!” The contrast is too precise and too loaded to be accidental — Oda is answering Pazzu’s line with Luffy’s entire existence.

Our Analysis

What makes this theory genuinely compelling isn’t any single parallel — it’s the density of them. Oda is famous for meticulous world-building and intentional callbacks, and the sheer number of structural mirrors between One Piece and *Castle in the Sky* suggests this goes far beyond casual inspiration. The Will of D theory in particular gains new dimensions when read through the Ul bloodline lens: just as Laputa’s two royal descendants represent opposing philosophies about the kingdom’s power (Sheeta wants it destroyed, Muska wants to weaponize it), Luffy and Blackbeard represent opposing philosophies about freedom and the One Piece itself. The ancient kingdom may have faced the exact same internal schism 800 years ago.

The Gulliver’s Travels connection introduced by the Japanese source adds another layer worth examining. If Oda is using the lands Gulliver visited as a structural template — Lilliput → Tontatta, Brobdingnag → Elbaf, Laputa → Skypiea, the land of the dead → Thriller Bark, Japan → Wano — then the final unvisited land, the Country of the Houyhnhnms (the “Horse Country”), may correspond to Laugh Tale itself. This is a wildly speculative leap, but it fits Oda’s known habit of embedding literary references into geography. It would also mean Laugh Tale is deliberately NOT a sky island, differentiating it from Laputa while still drawing on the same mythology.

The one significant counter-argument is that some of these parallels are genre conventions rather than direct homages — flying ships, ancient civilizations with advanced technology, and “chosen bloodline” narratives appear across dozens of fantasy works. The Noland/Pazzu parallel in particular may be more archetypal than specific. However, the Mayumi Tanaka casting — which Oda has explicitly confirmed was intentional — cements the Laputa connection as something Oda himself is conscious of and has never tried to hide. The question is how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Theory Credibility Rating

Theory Credibility: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Based on manga evidence and foreshadowing

Oda’s confirmed admiration for Miyazaki, his deliberate casting of Mayumi Tanaka, and the sheer density of structural parallels between *Castle in the Sky* and One Piece earn this theory four stars — the remaining uncertainty comes from the fact that “homage” and “blueprint” are different things, and we won’t know how deep the Laputa DNA runs in Laugh Tale until the Final Saga delivers its answer.
